Using a wheelchair was almost impossible at Port Arthur. The wheelchairs available for use were not suitable for the terrain of the site and were difficult to push. Overall it affected where we could go on the day. The walking tour (which stated that it was wheelchair accessible) was definitely NOT accessible. The tour guide walked onto grassed areas that were very rough and damp. At this point we had to abandon the walking tour and stick to only the paved paths. I believe that the website should more clearly reflect accurate accessible paths and activities so that outings can be planned.
A two-day ticket includes a guided walking tour of the Port Arthur Historic Site. Our guide was very knowledgeable but there was too much information given too quickly. Very little time to think about what was being said or remember it. Without the tour, visitors would just be walking around unaware of what they were looking at. Tickets cover two days' entry. Tickets also include a free ferry ride around the harbour area to view Island of the Dead and another island nearby.
We were on a weekend getaway and budgeted the entire day for visiting Port Arthur. Items On display at the historic site are very well curated and I think there's a very good level of detail on most of the architecture that we came across. The highlight was definitely the guided tour, our guide Suzanne was fabulous. She was funny, engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about showcasing Port Arthur. Thank you Suzanne! Highly recommended as the crew there was superb.
Well worth going out of your way to see this part of Australian history. You will need the full 2 days to visit. The entry pass covers this- and includes a 45mins intro tour and a 45mins cruise. The rest of the time you are free to meander thru all the grounds and buildings. Staff are extremely helpful and willing to pass on their knowledge. Their is also a museum underneath which you are given a "person" on entry to discover their heritage. Thoroughly enjoyable visit.
This is a beautiful site, well presented by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our orientation tour was taken by Caitlin and we met her again over the 2 days, she was engaging with her story telling and patient with questions, giving great sight into the history. My sister and I are travelling with our parents and took things slowly over 1.5 days. We were impressed at how accessible the site is. We borrowed a wheel chair for mum (no charge) and easily managed the site with a mixture of using the wheelchair and the complimentary golf buggies that were expertly driven by Jane and Nigel over the 2 days. The golf buggies roved around dropping off and picking up as required, a great service to ensure that tired legs didn’t limit the visit. We had breakfast in the 1830 restaurant and were served well by Wendy. The Isle of the dead tour was well worth braving the cold wind, there is a new walkway that again made it accessible for mum to walk slowly around. I highly recommend visiting this historic site, the grounds are stunning but what makes it memorable is the dedicated staff who ensure everything is just right.
